In a significant development, Justices N.V. Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S. Chandurkar were sworn in today as Judges of the Supreme Court of India. Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court. Notably, Justice Bishnoi opted to take his oath in Hindi.

The appointments of the three judges were officially cleared by the President on May 29, following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation issued on May 26. The Centre also issued the notification of their elevation on the same day.
Justice N.V. Anjaria previously served as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court and hails from the Gujarat High Court. Justice Vijay Bishnoi was the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, with his parent High Court being Rajasthan. Justice Atul S. Chandurkar was elevated from the Bombay High Court, where he served as a judge.
In terms of tenure, Justice Anjaria will serve on the bench until March 23, 2030. Justice Bishnoi’s tenure will end on March 25, 2029, while Justice Chandurkar will retire on April 7, 2030.
With these appointments, the Supreme Court has once again reached its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. However, the number will dip soon with the upcoming retirement of Justice Bela M. Trivedi, scheduled for June 9.
